How Much Hp Does a 4Afe Have?

The 4A–FE is a 1.6 L (1,587 cc) DOHC inline-four piston engine produced by Toyota from 1988 to 2000. It was built in Japan and used in the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Celica and Toyota MR2. In the US market, it was replaced by the ZZ series engine in 1998.

The 4A engine series was a 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder with variable intake timing (VVT), forged steel connecting rods, one balance shaft, cast aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder liner wet deck and open deck construction. The 4A family of engines were all belt driven eight-valve SOHC engines except for the dual overhead cam models.

The first generation of this engine ran from 1988 to 1991 and used TPI (Toyota Performance Intake) induction on some models which increased power output over the non TPI models due to better airflow into the cylinders.

This induction system consisted of tuned length intake runners and an air box that had a large diameter round filter element. These early TPI equipped cars are quite rare as most were sold outside North America where the emission standards were not as stringent. The second generation 4A–FE ran from 1992 to 1995 and saw power output slightly increased due to revised intake porting, larger valves and higher compression ratio while retaining the TPI system on some markets outside North America.

For 1996, power output was again increased due to further revisions which included VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent). With VVT-i added, peak power moved up 500 rpm to 6200 rpm on manual transmission cars while torque also rose throughout the rev range giving much better drivability especially at lower speeds and rpms.
