How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Toyota Rav4 Car Key
If you’ve lost your Toyota Rav4 car key, don’t panic! Replacing a lost or stolen key is much simpler and less expensive than you might think. Here’s what you need to know about replacing your Toyota Rav4 car key.
If you have a spare key, great! You can simply take your spare to your local Toyota dealership and have them make you a new copy. If you don’t have a spare, don’t worry – the process is still relatively simple.
First, call your local Toyota dealership and explain that you’ve lost your keys and need a replacement. They’ll likely ask for some basic information about your vehicle and may even run a VIN check to be sure they’re giving the correct replacement key to the right owner. Once they have all the necessary information, they’ll give you a quote for the cost of the replacement key.
Replacement keys typically cost between $50-$100, depending on the year/model of your Rav4 and whether or not you need a transponder chip programmed into the new key (more on that below). Once you’ve paid for the replacement key, it’ll be cut and programmed on-site at the dealership so you can get back on the road as soon as possible! If your Rav4 was manufactured after 1998, it likely has an immobilizer system which uses a transponder chip in order to prevent theft.
This means that in addition to cutting a new physical key, the dealer will also need to program this chip with an electronic ‘code’ in order for it to work with your vehicle’s ignition system. Don’t worry – this is all taken care of at the dealership when getting your replacement car key made!
Where Can I Get a Replacement Toyota Rav4 Car Key
If you need a replacement Toyota Rav4 car key, your best bet is to head to your local Toyota dealership. They will have the necessary equipment and expertise to get you a new key made quickly and efficiently. If you don’t have time to go to the dealership or if it’s after hours, there are a few other options available to you.
There are many reputable locksmiths who can come to your location and make you a new key on site. Some of these locksmiths may even be able to program your key so that it works with your vehicle’s immobilizer system.
How Do I Program a New Toyota Rav4 Car Key
If you’ve lost your Toyota Rav4 car key, or if it’s damaged and needs to be replaced, programming a new one is relatively easy to do. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
1. Locate the data link connector (DLC) under the driver’s side of the dash.
It should have 16 pins and will be labeled with “DLC” next to it. 2. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals 4 and 13 together on the DLC. This will put the Rav4 into diagnostic mode.
3. On the ignition key cylinder, turn the key to the ON position (but don’t start the engine). After about 5 seconds, you should see a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) on the odometer display. Write down this code as you’ll need it later.
4. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the jumper wire from terminals 4 and 13 on the DLC. 5a. If your Rav4 has push-button start: Press and hold down boththe brakes pedal ANDthe power button for 5 seconds without depressingthe accelerator pedal first; then release bothpedals simultaneously(this step must be completed within 10 seconds).
The system should then enter into registration/erasure mode and also indicate “REG FWD”or “REG AFT”onthe multi-information display(MID). If desired, registration can be canceled at any point by depressingand releasingthe brake pedal more than 3 times consecutivelywithin less than 10 seconds after enteringinto registrationmode; otherwise, continue with step 5b below within 30 seconds after registeringhas begun(if no action is taken for 30 seconds while in registrationmode, system exits automatically).
If you’re in need of a Toyota Rav4 car key replacement, there’s no need to worry. With a few simple tools and some basic knowledge, you can easily replace your lost or damaged key. First, locate the transponder chip on your old key.
This is usually located near the base of the key. Next, use a small screwdriver to remove the chip from the old key. Once the chip is removed, insert it into the new key.
Be sure to line up the notches on the chip with those on the new key. Finally, use a soldering iron to connect the two leads on the back of the new key to those on the transponder chip. Once everything is connected, test out your new key by starting up your Rav4 and driving it around for a bit.
